BET Plus, stylized as BET+ is launching today, September 19th. The streaming service is a new partnership between BET and Tyler Perry. The service will allow viewers to "stream black culture" as the website says. The streaming service will cost subscribers $9.99 per month. The platform will contain new and original content from a filmmakers and content creators such as Tracy Oliver, Will Packer, and of course, Tyler Perry.
Scott Mills, president of BET Networks said in a statement, “We are thrilled to offer a streaming experience of content curated for the underserved African American audience with BET+. African Americans have a higher [screening-video-on-demand] adoption rate than any other consumer base on the market, which is why BET+ is a natural complement of BET’s linear network.”
The service will also be home to cult classics such as Martin, Tyler Perry movies like Daddy’s Little Girls, and Madea plays AND movies. Scripted series from BET such as Being Mary Jane will be on the service in addition to reality tv shows like Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta. All of this content and more will be available to consumers ad-free, which we all have grown accustom to thanks to Netflix. The service also will feature stand-up comedy specials from D.L Hughley among others.
General Manager of BET, Devin Griffin said in an interview, “In our first year, we will release a BET+ original project almost every month, adding to our lineup of deep and diverse content. We’re focused on super-serving lovers of black stories by working with top talent, and supporting fresh new voices, on both sides of the camera.”
