California Appoints a Black Woman as their First Ever Surgeon General

Monday, January 28th, California’s Governor, Gavin Newsome decided to appoint Dr. Nadine Burke Harris as the state’s first ever Surgeon General. Burke Harris, a 43 year old pediatrician based in San Francisco said on Twitter, “Looking forward to rolling up my sleeves as CA’s first Surgeon General,” Burke Harris wrote on Twitter. “Thank you @GavinNewsom for your bold vision for health for all Californians. #preventscreenandheal!”.

On top of being a pediatrician, Dr. Burke Harris is the CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness, also based in San Francisco. On top of this, she is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ National Advisory Board for Screening and heads the Bay Area Research Consortium on Toxic Stress and Health. The Examiner reports that she will receive a salary of $200k and will be sworn in on February 11th.
