Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle has been tapped to play Ariel in Disney's live action remake of The Little Mermaid. Rob Marshall, who is the director of the film has been meeting with women for a few month, but has said that Halle has been the clear front runner from the beginning. Also set to join Halle in the cast are Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay. Another top grossing box office earner, Melissa McCarthy is in the runnings to play Ursula.
Marshall said, “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance, plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”
The live-action remake of the film will include original songs from the 1989 animated movie, in addition to new tunes from composer Alan Menken and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Halle playing Ariel will be her feature film debut. Bailey also stars in Grown-ish, which is on Disney's Freeform channel. Halle will have to take a quick break from singer with her sister to focus on her lines for Ariel.
Halle Berry, who has been confused with Bailey has tweeted in support of the casting by saying, In case you needed a reminder... Halles get it DONE. Congratulations @chloexhalle on this amazing opportunity, we can’t wait to see what you do! #TheLittleMermaid #HalleBailey."
