Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Opens its First Black Owned Barbershop

The busiest airport in America, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), there is now a Black owned barbershop on the grounds in the domestic terminal. The owner of the shop is named Roosevelt Gilbert. He is not new to owning his own shop, as he owns a shop in North DeKalb Mall in Decatur, Georgia, which has been said to be a well-patronized shop in the Atlanta area.

The shop is in prime location to succeed at the busiest airport in America. The airport sees roughly 100 million visitors a year. Since 2009, the airport has been wanting to open a Black owned shop and finally has its wish. Gilbert applied and was selected out of other applicants who wanted to own a shop in the airport back in 2014. That's a very long time and Gilbert said, "I’m just glad to be open. We had to go through a lot.”

It took five years due to complications in planning, delays, and construction. Another note, construction could only be done at night. That is another hiccup for a business trying to get open. However, the Barbershop Atlanta has finally opened in the airport and is ready to serve the travelers. The barbershop has 12 seats and a VIP Suite. It also offers many services such as men’s and women’s haircuts, shaves, styling, perms, facials, and even massages can be done at the shop. This is a full experience for travelers that is open 17 hours a day.

If you have some down time while waiting for a flight, or a missed flight, check out The Barber Shop Atlanta in the North Terminal Atrium next to TGI Fridays.
