In the Kanye song, Last Call he urges listeners to raise their glasses to the Roc. The song was released in 2004 and 16 years later, we still have good reasons to raise our glasses for a toast to Roc Nation. For those that don't know, Roc Nation, is an entertainment agency that was founded by Jay-Z in 2008. Roc Nation is a conglomerate; managing a record label, artists, athletes, a clothing line, philanthropy, concerts, and NOW, a school. A school? That's right, Jay-Z and Roc Nation now will be running a school called the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports, and Entertainment in conjunction with Long Island University (LIU), in Brooklyn, NY, Jay-Z's hometown.
Starting this semester, fall 2021, The Roc Nation School will offer undergraduate degrees in music, music technology, entrepreneurship & production, and sports management. Accepted students will get the chance to learn from LIU professors and visiting guest artists that will also deliver lecturers. The students will be able to participate in internships and get an opportunity to network with professionals and begin to build industry contacts.
Roc Nation will also be awarding their Hope Scholarship to 25% of the incoming freshmen class. The recipients of the Hope Scholarship will graduate from the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment without any debt, in addition to receiving individualized support and mentorship.
The School will also offer camps for younger aspiring students ages 10-18. High school aged students will be able to enroll in residential summer programs and all students that are 10-18 in age have the opportunity to be a part of Saturday programs in sports management and music. This portion of the program will kick off in the spring of 2021 and need-based scholarships will also be available for these students in the camps.
Desiree Perez, the CEO of Roc Nation said of their newest venture, “Pursuing higher education is an investment in one’s future. This partnership, envisioned alongside LIU President Dr. Cline, is a true investment in our community and young people in Brooklyn, in New York City and beyond. We’re excited that the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment will provide unique insight, knowledge and experiences for students and introduce the world to the next generation of unmatched talent.”
LIU President Dr. Kimberly Cline said, “Our proximity in and around New York City’s epicenter of music and sports clearly positions us to offer unparalleled experiential learning and access to professional opportunities that will launch students to success,”
Congrats Roc Nation, Jay-Z, and LIU on this monumental partnership. This will be sure to make a huge impact in educating the next generation of talent and talent managers.
