Kanye West hasn't tweeted since March 2nd, right before the pandemic hit. However, today, he made a much needed return to announce partnership between YEEZY and Gap. The collection is titled YEEZY Gap and is set to debut in the first quarter of 2021. Kanye tweeted a first look at what to expect from the new joint project complete with the hashtag “#WESTDAYEVER.”
For those that don't know, Kanye worked at Gap as a teenager and has been quoted saying, "I want to be the Steve Jobs of Gap." Kanye briefly rapped about his time at Gap in the song, Spaceship. He has also said he wanted to be the Hedi Slimane (Creative Director of Christian Dior's men's fashion line) for Gap.
According to The New York Times, the YEEZY design studio under Kanye’s creative direction will produce “modern, elevated basics for men, women and kids at an accessible price point.” The direction from Kanye will also cover how YEEZY Gap is presented in physical locations and the Gap web store.
The union between Kanye and Gap is a 10-year deal, that has the ability to be renewed at the 5 year mark of the contract. Gap believes by year 5, YEEZY will help to bring in approximately $1 billion in annual sales. They have great reason to believe this; Adidas has seen $1.3 billion in revenue as a result of their partnership with Ye. Kanye will receive royalties and potential equity in Gap based on sales performance over the next 10 years.
Global Head of Gap Brand Mark Breitbard said, “We are excited to welcome Kanye back to the Gap family as a creative visionary, building on the aesthetic and success of his YEEZY brand and together defining a next-level retail partnership.”
This announcement comes on the heels of Kanye filing the YEEZY trademark for multiple skincare and and beauty products, consisting of make-ups, body oils, aromatherapy, hair care products, fragrances, face masks, and other hygiene products. The company will be compromised of over 22 divisions and name Donda, after his late mother that passed in 2007. Kanye was just recently named a billionaire.
With these moves, it seems hes trying to continue his climb on the Forbes billionaire list. Congrats Ye.
