Money Mahome$

If you were looking for a Brinks truck yesterday and couldn't find it, it's because they all were backing up into Patrick Mahomes' driveway. Yesterday, Adam Schefter reported the 2020 Super Bowl MVP and 2019 League MVP had just signed an extension with Kansas City for 10 years. A football player signing a contract that long is unheard of, leading a twitter user to tweet, "did he sign with the Royals or the Chiefs". The Royals are Kansas City's baseball team, a sport that is used to seeing long term deals on an annual basis.

Once Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory, we were almost certain he would be line for a contract extension, just not of this magnitude. The Chiefs and Mahomes agreed to a 10 year extension worth $503 MILLION!!! Let that sink in. Mahomes is guaranteed 477 Million from that contract. He is the FIRST athlete to have a contract worth half of a billion dollars. Even if he gets hurt, Mahomes is still due $140 million, making the possibility of injury very lucrative regardless of how it turns out.

ESPN reported that Mahomes will receive $83 million-plus in signing bonuses from 2021 to '23 ($21.7 million in '21, $27.4 million in '22, $34 million-plus in '23). He is worth every penny of this contract too. Over the past 2 seasons, Mahomes leads the NFL in Pass TDs, Pass yards, wins, Total QBR, and yards per attempt. In that time, Mahomes has thrown for 9,412 yards, 76 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 31 regular-season games. In five playoff games, he has thrown for 1,474 yards, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions.

The quarterback has accomplished all of this at the tender age of 24; he doesn't turn 25 until September. He is the first quarterback in NFL history to win a league MVP and Super Bowl before turning 25. He is also the youngest player to win the honors of Super Bowl MVP as well. Andy Reid, the Chiefs' head coach said, "He's a natural leader and always grinding, whether that's on the field, in the weight room or watching film. He wants to be the best. He's a competitor, and his teammates feed off his energy. He makes us all better as an organization, and we are blessed he's going to be our quarterback for years to come.''

The Chiefs' general Manager Brett Veach said of Mahomes, "His abilities are so rare, and to couple that with an incredible personality is outstanding. We're going to continue to do everything we can to surround him with talent, and this deal provides us more flexibility to do that. He's obviously an integral part to our success, and we're thrilled he's going to be the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs for a long time.''

After the deal was done, Mahomes tweeted, "Here to Stay" as the caption to a 1 minute long video. This deal was monumental and we cannot wait to see how motivated he plays as a result of getting this deal done. Congrats and best of luck on the upcoming season!!!
