Khalid, the singing superstar returned home to El Paso, TX on Sunday to hold a benefit concert to raise funds for the victims of the of the mass shooting from August 3rd. The incident left 22 dead and an additional 24 injured. He titled the event Khalid & Friends: A Night for Suncity, which raised over $500,000 according to Khalid on his Twitter account.
On August 14th, the tickets for the concert went on sale and sold out in minutes. The concert was put on due to a joint effort between The Great Khalid Foundation and his record label’s Right Hand Foundation.
To kick the night off, Matthew McConaughey delivered an inspiring speech to keep the city together saying, “tonight is about healing and spirit filling.” Following the speech, Presidential candidate and the former Congressman Beto O'Rourke introduced Khalid to the stage. Also, the hero who threw water bottles at the shooter to throw him off, Chris Grant was welcomed on stage as well.
From this point on, it was Khalid's show. Aside from his performance, other industry stars took the stage such as SZA, Rae Sremmurd, and Lil Yachty. To close out the night, Khalid said to the massive crowd, “El Paso, I love you so much. This isn’t the end; this is just the beginning. We stand together. El Paso Strong.”
To raise more funds for the cause, Khalid is selling El Paso-themed “Forever of the 915” t-shirts on his website. All proceeds will go toward the El Paso Victims’ Fund.
