Randolph Ross will be joining his dad, Duane Ross at North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT) on the track team. His dad is the Director of the Track & Field program at the school and is welcoming his son with open arms. Randolph is a 6-time NCHSAA Class 4A State Champion, so the team and his dad are blessed to receive such a talent.
Randolph received offers from Power 5 conference schools such as Ohio State, South Carolina, and Iowa. In a video on Tuesday, he turned down each of the schools signs and revealed a NCAT shirt, notifying the world that his college choice for the next 4 years will be an HBCU. A link to the video is below.
Ross is joining a program that is making national waves. the NCAT Men's track & field team was ranked 6th in the nation this year, making that the highest of any HBC
U D1 program ever. They achieved that ranking by winning the indoor title, as well as the outdoor title, which they have claimed for the 3rd straight year. A&T's men's track team was actually ranked higher than all 3 schools Ross turned down during his selection day.
He just won the NCHSAA Class 4A Championship with a time of 46.80 seconds in the 400m Dash, making that the 5th fastest time in the state's history. He is the 11th high school boy ever in the state to run under 47 seconds. During the indoor season, he became 3rd all-time, running a 47.57 400m. Ross is also the holder of the state record for the 300m Dash at 33.80 seconds! He also competes in the high jump, jumping 7 feet, making him an All-American in the field event as well as the 400m Dash. This Summer, Randolph has plans of breaking the state record of the 400m Dash set in 2017.
Congratulations Randolph, we can only hope you do very well at NCAT and that more athletes of your caliber will begin to continually choose to take their talents to HBCUs!!!
