The Grammy award winning singer/songwriter, Ciara and her Superbowl winning quarterback boo, Russell Wilson have joined an ownership team for the Seattle Sounders of the MLS.
Last week, the Seattle Sounders announced there were 11 new families coming on as new owners. While the organization has been around since 1974, the Sounders made their debut during the 2009 season. Since 2009, the team has made the MLS Cup Playoffs each season, won the MLS cup in 2016, and they have also won 4 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships. The team has also led the MLS in attendance at games for the last 8 years.
Majority owners of the team include Actor/Comedian Drew Carey, Jody Allen, and Adrian Hanauer. Hanauer, a business man said, “This was not a financial investment. This was about community, team, culture, diversity, inclusiveness and, yeah, winning.” Russell Wilson followed up by saying, “We’re really excited about building that winning culture. This city is a special place. The Pacific Northwest is a place we love and we get to raise our kids here and have a lot of fun while doing it. We want to bring the best soccer players in the world right here to Seattle.”
The Wilsons have been actively involved in investing in sports. in 2014, Russ helped to bring an arena for NBA and NHL play to Seattle. He and Ciara are also actively involved in bringing an MLB team to Portland, Oregon. Ciara said of their newest venture, “This is not only a special moment for Russ and I, but for our kids as well. When we walked into the building and our kids were running around with their names on their little jerseys, it meant a lot for so many reasons. It’s an honor to join the Sounders team and have the unique opportunity to represent female ownership within major-league sports. The team has already done some amazing things, but I believe the best is ahead, and we’re excited to be part of that."
After the deal was finalized, Russ took to Twitter and typed, “Football. Fútbol. We Love them both! We can’t wait for our kids to grow up loving Soccer!”
We wonder what the Wilsons will do next that doesn't involve a football field or a stage.
