Now normally, when Southern University is in the news, it's usually about their band. However, that's not the case today. Southern University and A&M College just launched their own hemp-based CBD product line: ALAFIA. ALAFIA comes from a Yoruba word that translates to “inner peace.” With this in mind, the products were created.
The products came to fruition from a partnership between Southern University's Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Baton Rouge and Ilera Holistic Healthcare. In their lab, tests were conducted on pesticide-free products, which will be available for over-the-counter purchase very soon throughout the nation. Until then, the products became available for purchase yesterday at certain locations throughout the state of Louisiana. Currently, there are only two products available; Isolate CBD and Full Spectrum CBD, with more products to be released soon.
Osagie Imasogie, chairman of Ilera Holistic Healthcare said, “Our team of experts created a superior hemp derived product with patients in mind. We are proud of this partnership with Southern [University] and pleased to know our product will be available to the people of Louisiana and beyond.”
The CEO of Ilera, Dr. Chanda Macias said, “Our goals with this line is to support all communities by creating access to wellness products at affordable price points,” she said. “No one should endure the stress of trying to balance a healthy lifestyle at high costs; that within itself is unhealthy.”
Not to be left out, the president of Southern University, Ray Belton also added some thoughts around the partnership saying, that partnering with Ilera has proved to be sucessful from the very beginning. Leading researchers from the university Dr. McMeans and Dr. Snowden were also thanked by President Belton and closed his statement by saying “This is an exciting time for healthcare and business here in the state of Louisiana, and Southern is honored to be a part of it all.”
For Dr. Macias, this launch was very special to her; being an alum of an HBCU herself, Howard University. She was determined to get the launch off the ground right in time for the first Black History Month of this new decade.
She said, “We are witnessing history. Southern University partnered with us to bring this product line to market, making them the first HBCU to launch a CBD line… When you think of the rich history Southern University holds here in Louisiana, this launch only mirrors the monumental impacts this higher education institution has made in this country. As an alum of Howard University, I am truly humbled and proud to be a part of this historic moment.”
